JUSTIN, TX, OCTOBER 12, 2023 – The City of Justin Community Volunteer Fire Department is celebrating the 50th Annual Layne Wilkerson Fish Fry on Saturday, October 21 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. This community favorite event, dating back to 1974, was initially established by Mr. Layne Wilkerson, an Honorary Lifetime Member of the JCVFD who was also the visionary and Chief Cook behind the fish fry fundraiser. Mr. Wilkerson passed away on April 30, 2019, that same year the JCVFD renamed the event the Layne Wilkerson Fish Fry to honor his legacy and the dedication he gave to this annual fundraiser.
Roots run deep in the City of Justin and the dedication to the community can be found everywhere you look. JCVFD Assistant Chief, Micheal Turner, has been a part of the Fish Fry tradition since he was just eight years old. His father, Mike Turner, joined the JCVFD in 1990 and served as Assistant Chief himself. When asked about his journey as a firefighter, current Assistant Chief Turner said, “I knew that this is what I wanted to do when I witnessed these gentlemen selflessly leave their families to go help others in need.”
The Fire Department anticipates serving more than 1,500 guests and cooking up over 1,400 pounds of fish at this year's event. Tickets are $18 for adults and $10 for children eight years old and younger. It’s an all-you-can-eat affair, and raffle tickets will also be available for purchase. All funds will benefit the Justin Community Volunteer Fire Department. Tickets are available online at https://justin-volunteer-fire-department.square.site/ and in person at City Hall.
For five decades, the Layne Wilkerson Fish Fry has been a symbol of community, dedication, and support for the City of Justin. As the 50th-anniversary event approaches, we invite both residents, new and old, to join us in honoring a tradition that unites us all.
